On March 19th, 2003, a U.S.-led NATO alliance began bombing Iraq, a nation that had not attacked any NATO member. The goal was to combat the apparent threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). Then U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell even held up a vial of white powder, allegedly proving the existence of chemical weapons in Iraq.
Later, it was established, such WMDs were never found. They didn’t exist. A million Iraqis died, and the NATO aggression sent the Middle East into disarray. The War on Iraq had not been a legitimate one and had not been ratified by the United Nations.
President Putin of Russia even referred to this event in his address to the nation on February 24th, 2022, justifying the Russian “special operation” (invasion) on Ukraine:
But the example that stands apart from the above events is, of course, the invasion of Iraq without any legal grounds. They used the pretext of allegedly reliable information available in the United States about the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. To prove that allegation, the US Secretary of State held up a vial with white pow[d]er, publicly, for the whole world to see, assuring the international community that it was a chemical warfare agent created in Iraq. It later turned out that all of that was a fake and a sham, and that Iraq did not have any chemical weapons. Incredible and shocking but true. We witnessed lies made at the highest state level and voiced from the high UN rostrum. As a result, we see a tremendous loss in human life, damage, destruction, and a colossal upsurge of terrorism.
Of course, Putin’s references to chemical weapons are part of a Russian propaganda effort. Russia’s Foreign Minister Maria Zakharova now accuses the United States of having operated laboratories for the development of military-grade chemical and biological weapons. She said, “We have found your own products. We have found your bioweapons.”
I understand how propaganda works, and at this point, nothing certain can be said about the existence of American-Ukrainian bioweapons programs. But since China backs the Russian accusation, U.S. Press Secretary Jen Psaki was forced to release the following statement on Twitter:
Now that Russia has made these false claims, and China has seemingly endorsed this propaganda, we should all be on the lookout for Russia to possibly use chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine, or to create a false flag operation using them. It’s a clear pattern.
What is also a clear pattern is that a U.S.-led NATO has previously waged aggressive rather than defensive wars, namely against Serbia (1999), Afghanistan (2001–2021), Iraq (2003–2011, and 2014–2021), Libya (2011), Syria (2014-present), and many other places in the Middle East and around the world.
NATO, which is supposed to be a defensive organization to provide security to its members, has been turned into an aggressor. The purpose of NATO aggression has been to protect the position of the United States as the last and only global superpower. Using NATO, the U.S. has secured its energy and oil interests in the Middle East, and in the process, has created many new enemies who will never forgive the West.
It matters not whether the USA has or has not been working on biological weapons in Ukraine. It matters that the non-Western-aligned world has every reason to believe so, and it could form the perfect pretext for the Rest of the World to ally itself against the West. Russia is spearheading what might evolve into a global backlash against historical NATO aggression.
I conclude, firstly, that it may become necessary for Western European nations to dissociate from the United States, lest the world seeks to have its revenge on European soil for the crimes committed under U.S. leadership. And secondly, I conclude that NATO must denounce its aggressive policies and return to serve the security of its members.
The non-Western world may be seeking revenge, and in that case, Europeans better prepare to defend themselves, independently of the USA.
