In the eyes of Israel’s Zionist leadership, the Gaza strip poses a threat to its national security. As with the Cuban missile crisis under President Kennedy, Israel’s enemies (such as Iran, Russia, and China) could use Gaza to launch missiles at Tel Aviv. More importantly, a militarized Gaza might attack or control the Suez Canal, the crucial trade artery supplying European markets—and American-Israeli profits.
And so, Israel has decided to annex Gaza entirely. It must have been planned years in advance, though state powers frequently tend to present their plans as random events in order not to anger anyone.
