By the end of this year, most Belgian citizens will receive their third vaccination shot for c*vid-1984. (I don’t have the free speech to mention the correct name of the condition I’m referring to, for Medium.com might shut down my blog if I fail to comply with ever more stringent global speech codes.) But three shots in a year is an extraordinary measure for a disease with a similar death toll as during a heavy flu season. So, what is the vaccine deal really about?
Next year, there will be more: European governments are already stocking up on tens of millions of shots for 2022 and 2023. Judging from the size of the orders — The Netherlands, with a population of 17 million, has ordered an additional 60 million shots from Pfizer — we are looking at three more shots, minimum. That’ll total six shots in two years just to combat a variant of a known flu virus.
