The teaser trailer for Disney’s new Snow White remake garnered over 1.4 million down-votes, versus a bit over 100k up-votes. (You can check by installing a ‘Youtube down-vote extension’ that makes the numbers visible in your browser.) And at 879,000 down-votes, the official trailer still has 25 times as many down-votes than up-votes.
What makes people hate the new Snow White so much? For starters, the new brown-skinned version of Snow White, played by Renee Zegler, mockingly called Snow Brown, has made herself very unpopular by repeatedly taking a piss as the 1937 Disney classic, which was based on a German fairy tale.
In this live-action Snow White installment, Snow White isn’t that interested in the prince any longer, either. Nope. She’s going straight for the money. Judging by the trailer, Snow White ultimately ends up playing the role of a female Robin Hood leading a military coup to reclaim her brown father’s riches from the evil white witch (played by Jewess Gal Gadot).
The first problem with the film is that Gal Gadot’s beauty by far outclasses that of Renee Zegler’s Snow White. The second problem is that Snow White isn’t white. She’s brown. And the third problem is that she isn’t womanly anymore. The new Snow White is openly feminist (and easily offended).
At one point during the trailer, the dwarves realize “she’s a human”, upon which the brown Snow White asks what else they thought she was. Of course, it refers to the deeply rooted inferiority complex among many brown people living in White countries, namely that they, perhaps, could be thought of as animals.
Though this inferiority complex may warrant its own movie, it does not belong in a European children’s fairy tale. Technically, it’s an anachronism (inserting modern issues into films about the past). And if the full movie has any more of it, it may become an unbearable watch.
I can imagine White people losing interest in a movie that only pretends to be an inception of the German fairy tale, but which has otherwise nothing to do with it. And I can imagine non-White people losing interest in a brown heroin playing the role of an archetypical White one.
So, both potential audiences feel burned, and the trailers’ comments section shows it:
Wow. Disney. You truly are incredible. It took you 3 years, multiple rewrites, unnecessary CGI, and 209 million dollars just for me to enjoy a comment section of a movie I will never watch. Bless you.
I bet the original Snow White would do better in the box office today than the live action.
Rachel Zelger: Snow White is not gonna be saved by the Prince. The Prince: Good. Because I'm here for your stepmother.
They finally did it. They made a movie nobody is going to pirate.
So glad they've remained faithful to the original story, like the part where Snow White attempts a military coup.
Or take this brutal comment:
My niece 6years old: "uncle but where is snow white? I didn"t see her."
This Snow White isn’t worth saving.
